What this is

FDA warns that health-care providers are reporting increased deaths and hospitalizations from intentional ingestion or inhalation. This is not a wellness intervention, but it belongs in Toxins because it is a common recreational/sexual-enhancement product sold in consumer channels and has a distinct acute-fatality profile.

Mechanism

Alkyl nitrites cause rapid vasodilation, hypotension, methemoglobinemia risk, tissue irritation, and hypoxemia; products are often misleadingly packaged as cleaners or deodorizers.

Dose & route

Avoid ingestion or inhalation; emergency care for chest pain, severe headache, cyanosis, syncope, or altered mental status
